Although it can be a lot of work, there are some steps you can take on your own to help improve your lawn’s health, if you wish. Starting lawn care maintenance early on also helps ensure better results, and will be more apparent quickly. We hope these tips will come in handy and you prepare for and enjoy the warmer weather during the spring season!

1. Loosen soil.

Also known as “aerating” the soil, loosening soil is meant to break up any patches of hard, compacted soil. When soil is too compacted, it can be very difficult for your grass roots to break through into the soil and root, thus preventing green grass from truly thriving. At the same time, pesky weeds grow well in this type of environment, which can be troublesome, since they have a tendency to overtake your entire lawn. An aerator tool can be just the trick to break up any those tougher sections of your lawn.

2. Just enough water does the trick.

Everything in moderation is exactly the motto you should stick to when caring for your lawn. Just the right amount of water will depend on what type of grass you have—cool weather or warm weather grass, as well as the time of the year. During spring, the weather is relatively mild and so you may experience days you may need more water and vice versa. Too much water, though, and your grass may be susceptible to disease, invite insects and other critters to play, and even reduce its tolerance to drought.

3. Don’t forget the fertilizer.

Fertilizer gives lawns the nutrients needed to survive and be healthy. It is like when we take our daily dose of vitamins. Our program handles all of the fertilizer applications so that you won’t have to worry about it. It may help, though to help you understand what is contained in the fertilizer that helps your grass grow. The most common nutrients are: nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. Some fertilizers can also help maintain the pH balance, or how acidic or not your soil may be. All of these factors play a role in your lawn’s health which is why fertilizer is a crucial element of lawn care.

4. Control those weeds.

As part of our program, we take care of any existing weeds through pre-emergent weed control and prepare the lawn to prevent future weeds from popping up. We use only environmentally-friendly products to take care of weeds that contain no harmful chemicals. We encourage you to do the same.

5. Keep your lawn as trim as can be.

Your grass stays green and thrives if you periodically keep the blades no longer than a third of an inch. Without mowing, lawns appear wild, overrun, and will certainly invite pests and other unsightly weeds. Mowing strengthens your lawn and makes them denser, giving them the vitality it needs to continue growing throughout the entire spring season.
